LET land on Fota

London & Edinburgh Trust subsidiary LET Leisure have unveiled plans for a £45m redevelopment of the 780-acre Fota Island near Cork, Eire.

Proposals include a 100-bedroom four-star hotel with conference facilities, a sports complex with two championship golf courses and a golf club. There are also plans for 220 holiday homes as well as the restoration of the island’s historic arboretum.

LET Leisure’s first venture in Eire follows negotiations with An Taisce (the Irish National Trust) and Bord Failte (the Irish Tourist Authority) on the preservation of one of the republic’s more famous estates.

A planning application for the development is about to be submitted to Cork council. At present the island is owned by University College, Cork, but LET have an option to buy the island’s freehold by the end of next year.

Architects Colwyn Foulkes & Partners designed the proposals for Fota Island.
