Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Birmingham City Council have unveiled a masterplan to redevelop Edgbaston Stadium, with the duo formally launching a bid to the government’s levelling up fund.
The project marks the third phase of the wider Edgbaston masterplan. Proposals for the redevelopment include a new stadium-based, mixed-use community hub with potential for an NHS walk-in centre, a second hub at a former police station in Quinton, a piazza for markets and events, and skills and apprenticeship centres.
An on-site hotel, linking to the transformation of the existing Raglan and Priory, stands at the site and is also under consideration.
Masterplan partners include Compass Group UK and Ireland, which will invest in the proposed skills and apprenticeship centres.
Stuart Cain, chief executive of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “Edgbaston is one of the world’s best-loved cricket grounds, having been the backdrop for great sporting drama for nearly 140 years. These proposals help realise the legacy of the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games, creating a welcoming place for our whole community to enjoy.”
Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands, said: “By bringing a major mixed-use redevelopment to this internationally recognised venue, we can deliver substantial benefits to our communities. It also dovetails nicely with the new stations on the nearby Camp Hill Line which are coming to fruition.
“I’m particularly encouraged by the corporate partnerships with Compass and others, which promise to deliver important employment and training opportunities in high-demand skills – providing exciting prospects for local residents.”
Works have already begun on the £93m second phase of the broader Edgbaston masterplan, which will provide 375 flats with backing from Patrizia.
The first phase, carried out in 2011, involved the £32m redevelopment of the South and West Stands at the stadium.
