L&G brings forward £20m later life care project

Legal & General has brought forward a £20m social care research partnership with Edinburgh University in response to Covid-19.

The Advanced Care Research Centre’s programme will begin in September, with 25 researchers focusing on improving later life care and how this is provided.

The seven-year programme was established by the university with £20m in funding from L&G.

Nigel Wilson, chief executive at L&G, said: “The current threat to our later life care system is very real.

“Rather than looking at quick fixes on short-term Covid-19 specific issues, the pressures on the care system will remain after the current pandemic subsides, and a longer-term, system-wide, research-backed approach will be required.”

Professor Bruce Guthrie, ACRC director, added: “Positive, evidence-based change to the way care is delivered to those in later life was important before this crisis, and will be even more important and urgent afterwards.”
