Lidl has overtaken Waitrose to become the UK’s seventh largest supermarket, the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel show.
Sales at Lidl rose by 18.9% in the 12 weeks ended 13 August, while market share increased to 5.2%. Waitrose recorded a 2.8% rise in sales, leaving its market share unchanged at 5.1%.
Total supermarket sales were 4% higher during the period, with all of the big four supermarkets recording sales growth. Market share fell among the big four, however.
