Lidl sets new store target of 1,100 by 2025

Lidl is planning to reach a store count of 1,100 by the end of 2025, creating 4,000 new jobs across the UK.

Earlier this year the grocer set out plans to operate 1,000 supermarkets by 2023 and invest £1.3bn into the UK business, despite recording a £25m loss last year. Lidl spent £654m in 2020 opening a new warehouse and 51 shops, giving it a total of 810.

Lidl confirmed it remains on track to reach 1,000 by the end of 2023. The additional 100 stores will be across England, Scotland and Wales and will feature solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. Lidl also pledged to increase staff wages.

Christian Hartnagel, chief executive at Lidl GB, said: “Our new store target today marks a significant investment for the business. We remain committed to our bricks-and-mortar strategy and maintaining our store opening pace; roughly a store a week for the next four years.”
