Lidl to join line up at Verdion’s iPort

shedTHUMB.jpegLidl is opening a distribution centre at Verdion’s £500m iPort multi-modal logistics development in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The new £70m warehouse marks another milestone in the supermarket’s UK expansion plans, and follows the opening of Lidl’s newest regional distribution centre in Southampton earlier this month.

The supermarket will occupy 628,000 sq ft with additional ancillary areas on a 35-acre plot within phase one of the 6m sq ft logistics scheme.

Lidl will join Fellowes, Amazon and CEVA which have also taken space at iPort’s phase one. More than 2m sq ft has now been committed.

The supermarket, which opened its first UK-based regional distribution centre in 1994, has warehouses in ten other locations: Northfleet, Enfield, Belvedere, Livingston, Weston-Super-Mare, Lutterworth, Newton Aycliffe, Runcorn, Bridgend and Southampton.

A planning application for Lidl’s new warehouse and office space has been submitted, with construction anticipated to start in 2017.

Adrienne Howells, Lidl UK’s head of warehouse expansion, said: “We can confirm our 13th distribution centre in Great Britain, bringing support to our existing and future stores in the North.”

Michael Hughes, chief executive officer of Verdion, said: “Lidl is a strong operator, and will bring with it many new job opportunities for Doncaster and the surrounding areas.”

Gent Visick, CBRE and Cushman & Wakefield are letting agents for iPort; Colliers International acted for Lidl.
