Lidl’s British store count reaches 800

Discount retailer Lidl has upped its store numbers to 800 in Britain, after launching 50 new stores in the past year.

Lidl will invest £1.3bn in store expansion over 2021 and 2022.

The retailer is targeting 1,000 stores in Britain by the end of 2023. It said it will open 16 stores in January and February.

Lidl is opening four new locations this week in Cambridge, London, Boston and Dumbarton. This will be followed by another six next week.

The supermarket has 100 stores in Scotland, and expects to open its 100th store in London this year.

Logistics-wise, it has opened and expanded six warehouses over the past four years.

Christian Härtnagel, chief executive of Lidl GB, said: “We’re looking forward to opening our doors to even more communities this year and into this new decade, where we see so much potential for further growth.”
