Lipton and son unite for £2.7bn Canning Town

Sir Stuart Lipton and his son, Elliot, have been selected to work together for the first time on a £2.7bn regeneration project in east London.

Sir Stuart’s Chelsfield Partners joined the E-Central consortium, alongside his son’s affordable housing company First Base, East Thames and Laing O’Rourke in March to bid for the redevelopment of Canning Town and Custom House.

The consortium replaces Lend Lease and Taylor Wimpey, who walked away from the project’s development panel last year.

The local authority has also selected French construction group Bouygues to join original panellist Countryside Properties on the project. Manchester-based Modus has been chosen as reserve developer.

First Base director Richard Powell said: “East London is experiencing massive change. It is crucial that Canning Town and Custom House benefit from this change.”

Architect Erik van Egeraat recently re-masterplanned the scheme to increase the amount of commercial space.

It now comprises 650,000 sq ft of shops, leisure and offices and 10,000 homes. The plans will be adopted within Newham’s Supplementary Planning Framework in the summer.
