Littlewoods plans 40-store expansion programme

Littlewoods Stores yesterday launched a £500m expansion programme which will create 3,000 jobs in the next four years. It plans to add 40 stores to the present 130 and it is building a distribution centre at Burton on Trent. The stores, averaging 2,323 sq m (25,000sq ft), are likely to cost between £10m and £15m each, while the distribution centre, due to open in January 1998, would cost £35m, the company said. Littlewoods Stores is half-way through a five-year £175m programme to reposition itself in the high street.
