Littlewoods is to invest £120m on its high street stores over the next two to three years.
The revamp includes putting its Index catalogue outlets inside Littlewoods stores and adding Catalogue Cafes where customers can access home shopping facilities from a computer. Littlewoods has already run trials on the new format in two stores and will extend it to 25 branches over the next three months.
The changes will achieve £50m cost savings each year with backroom services like logistics consolidated from four operations into one.
The company also dismissed rumours it would bid for Storehouse, the retail group that owns the BhS and Mothercare chains.Financial Times 30/06/99 page 27
