Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has given Harworth Group a £2.05m loan to accelerate development of its 900-home scheme, Moss Nook.
The funding, given from the city region’s infrastructure fund, will help build a road network needed to deliver the first phase of around 240 homes across 16 acres.
Once the road has been built, Harworth will market the engineered land for sale to a housebuilder.
The 95-acre scheme, which has been previously been used as a colliery and concrete pipe works site, has planning permission for 900 homes.
Steve Rotherham, mayor of the Liverpool city region, said: “We have a very clear policy that we should look at brownfield sites first when building the homes that we need in our city region.
“As land previously used for mining and other industrial processes, and located close to the centre of St Helens, Moss Nook is exactly the type of brownfield site we should be developing and I’m pleased that our £2m funding will enable this project to come forward.”
