Liverpool council lodges Project Jennifer CPO

Great Homer Street

Liverpool city council has officially submitted the compulsory purchase order needed to progress with work on St Modwen’s £150m regeneration of Great Homer Street in Liverpool.

The scheme, known as Project Jennifer, will transform a 45-acre site in north Liverpool, creating retail and employment floorspace, homes, improved public spaces and community and leisure facilities. It will also feature a 110,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s supermarket.

In response to feedback from local residents, properties on Skirving Street will not be included in the CPO and will instead be integrated into the redevelopment plans, allowing residents to remain in their homes.

The decision signals the start of a statutory period during which any objections to the CPO will be heard. If challenges are lodged, the CPO would be referred to a public enquiry, which would likely to be held later this year.

Michelle Taylor, regional director at St. Modwen, said: “This decision is another major milestone for the community-led regeneration of Great Homer Street. There is still a great deal of work to be done but, with the CPO process officially underway and providing there are no major objections received, the scheme could start on site as early as 2012.”

Liverpool city council’s cabinet member for regeneration, Malcolm Kennedy, said: “It will help transform north Liverpool, provide vital new facilities and create more than 1,000 jobs. I am optimistic that we will now see this scheme progressing very quickly.”
