Liverpool FC has submitted plans for a £60m-£70m stadium in Stanley Park, less than 300 yards from its famous Anfield home.
The club plans to build a 55,000-seater stadium, scheduled to be ready for the start of the 2005-2006 season.
The club has looked at seven different sites as well as expanding Anfield over the last two years, in a bid to increase the amount of fans able to watch the team play live.
Chief executive Rick Parry said: “What we don’t want to do, and what we won’t ever do, is lose the focus that the team comes first.
“Our view is that this stadium is right for our needs. There is still a lot of work to do though and a number of obstacles to overcome yet.
“It will take time but I hope all of the fans are excited by what they can see.”
Liverpool council’s ruling group, the Liberal Democrats, are opposed to the Stanley Park plans, however, and would prefer the club to extend its current home.
