A £25m learning centre in Liverpool has been given the green light, making it the first regeneration Private Finance Initiative in the country.
The Forward Learning Centre at Speke Park will include a secondary school for 900 pupils, leisure facilities and a community centre.
The project is a joint venture between developer Education Solutions, Liverpool City Council and the Speke Garston Partnership. Contracts have been signed and work will begin this summer, to be completed in 2002.
Alan Smithies, head of Speke Community Comprehensive, said that the scheme would be “a springboard for regeneration”. The site will also include a series of green spaces and a district shopping centre.
