Liverpool City Council has outlined plans for 1,500 eco-friendly homes at the Mersey waterfront development.
The council is working with IMGF Developments, a joint venture between ION Developments and Midia, to redevelop the former site of the International Garden Festival.
IMGF will masterplan the “green community” with a goal to submit a planning application in summer 2020 and delivering the first homes in 2022.
Development of the 28-acre riverside site is backed by a £9.9m grant from Homes England for initial site works.
The council will apply to Liverpool City Region Combined Authority for further finance for remediation and infrastructure.
The site of the former landfill has been empty for 20 years.
Joe Anderson, mayor of Liverpool, said: “The derelict site situated to the west of Festival Gardens presents a huge opportunity to create a new community that would be truly transformational for housing in Liverpool, generating millions of pounds every year in council tax revenue.”
Steve Parry, of IMGF Developments, said: We are looking to transform what is currently a brownfield, former municipal tip into one of the greenest communities in the north, incorporating newly created parkland that will expand the existing Festival Gardens.”
The council will review proposals for the development at the cabinet meeting on Friday 6 December.
