Livingstone promises ‘short, focused’ London Plan public inquiry

Delivering Crossrail and half a million homes will be the focus of the public inquiry into mayor for London Ken Livingstone’s plans for the capital.

In November, the panel conducting the examination in public of the draft London Plan, chaired by Alan Richardson, will draw up a list of topics it wishes to investigate and what witnesses to call.

Edward Simpson of the Planning Inspectorate will conduct the inquiry.

Mayor Livingstone said that the inquiry, which will start on 3 March, will not look at every single detail of the plan.

Livingstone said: “It won’t be like the Heathrow terminal 5 inquiry, which dragged on for years and years. It will be quite short and focused, and should take about six weeks.”

He added that the issues the panel would focus on were likely to be the issues that have been raised in response to the GLA’s consultation on the Plan.

Although Livingstone said that the responses had been “overwhelmingly positive”, concerns had been raised over what would happen if Crossrail did not go ahead or was delayed, and where the 500,000 homes required by the Plan would go.

The GLA is analysing over 1,500 responses to the London Plan from businesses, lobby groups and members of the public.
