Local brewer tipped to be first tenant in Cardiff Bay retail and leisure scheme

Local brewer S A Brain has been tipped as the first licensed leisure occupier in a new £20m retail and leisure scheme at the Oval Basin in Cardiff Bay’s Inner Harbour.

It is also holding talks with Tarmac Richardson to open an outlet at Atlantic Wharf where Allied Domecq is believed to have got a 1,858 sq m (20,000 sq ft) nightclub unit under offer.

The brewer, which recently took over the Crown Buckley chain, is believed to be looking to operate a themed-sports bar in the 13,935 sq m (150,000 sq ft) scheme.

Last week Sovereign Land submitted a plans for the development which will include 7,432 sq m (80,000 sq ft) of retail and up to three stand-alone licensed leisure units.

Letting agent Healey & Baker’s Robert Asbury said that up to four national leisure operators are considering units in the scheme: “We are looking to bring something new into the bay.” He also confirmed that Sovereign is for an anchor tenant for the 278 to 1,393 sq m (3,000 to 15,000 sq ft) food unit.

Philip Hughes Davies are also agents on the scheme.
