Local football chief plans £105m south Wales scheme

Wyn Holloway, the owner of Merthyr Tydfil’s football club, is drawing up plans for the redevelopment of a 234.7ha (580 acres) site in the south Wales town as a £105m mixed-use leisure scheme.

The proposals include 46,450 sq m (500,000 sq ft) of retail (including a department store and a foodstore), a 12,500-seat football stadium, a multiplex cinema, a 3,000-seat multipurpose hall, swimming pool, sports village, and waterfront restaurants and bars. There will also be a major office element and a 150-unit residential scheme.

Holloway said: “There’s very little for the people of Merthyr to do, so we decided to do something about it. We’re keeping around 150 acres of land for expansion and will consider building out further phases in five-to-10 years’ time.”

He has applied for £25m of Objective One funding to go towards conference and business centre facilities at the scheme.

Holloway has an agreement in place to buy the land from current owner Celtic Energy
