London adds housing zones

plans-THUMB.jpegLondon deputy mayor Richard Blakeway has announced four new housing zones for the capital.

They are Ilford town centre in Redbridge, Rainham and Beam Park in Havering, Meridian Water in Enfield and Poplar Riverside in Tower Hamlets.

These new zones will deliver 12,330 homes, bringing the total homes planned for the existing 15 zones to 45,000.

The announcement follows the designation of 11 London housing zones earlier in the year.

In total there will be 20 housing zones across London, which are intended to deliver at least 50,000 new homes.

A total of £400m will be invested in the 20 zones, half of which will be a grant and half of which will be recoverable.

Chancellor George Osborne announced in his March Budget an additional 20 new zones outside the capital.

Housing zones receive government support and finance to unlock brownfield sites for new homes.

BNP Paribas Real Estate’s Adrian Owen said: “This announcement is an important milestone in the race to address the capital’s housing crisis. With the majority of London’s development land under the control of public sector bodies, it is not only vital that local authorities and government departments take a leading role in the process but it is also essential that new developments are supported by investment in local infrastructure and transportation projects.”
