London has topped the rankings for best cities for tourism and investment this year, according to an annual report from Resonance Consultancy.
Resonance, which advises on real estate, tourism and development, said that London has retained the top spot for the sixth year running even with a “significant fall” in the quality of its natural and built environment. The capital tumbled to number 35 from second place in the “Place” category, owing to a “significant” increase in crime.
The report, which benchmarks the performances of more than 250 cities, showed London was boosted by its performance on immigration and diversity, propelling it to third place from 38 in the “People” category.
It was also bolstered by its performance in the “Programming” category, which measures nightlife, shopping, restaurants and entertainment.
Paris and New York were placed second and third respectively in the rankings. Resonance said New York lost out on second place to Paris given the “superior” quality of the French capital’s natural and built environment, as well as its arts, culture, entertainment and culinary scene
However, New York retained the top spot for promotion, leading London and Paris on stories, references and recommendations shared online
The report uses methodology analysing the performance of each city on a range of factors that show positive correlations with attracting employment, investment and visitors to cities. These range from the number of quality culinary experiences and museums, to the number of Global 500 corporations, to the number of direct flight connections and mentions each city has on social media channels.
Chris Fair, president and chief executive of Resonance, said London, Paris and New York “succeeded by falling least far against a backdrop of global decline”.
