London hostels get £11.6m boost

London mayor Boris Johnson has pledged £11.6m to provide hostel accommodation in the capital.

The funding will go towards building hostels and refurbish existing ones, providing 320 beds.

St Mungos in West London, YMCA across the city, Islington & Shoreditch Housing Association and Camden borough will all benefit from the funding.

Jenny Edwards CBE, chief executive of Homeless Link, the umbrella body for homelessness charities, said: “With providers facing real pressures on budgets in the current climate, we welcome this extra funding.”

Johnson added: “There are some fantastic organisations working to tackle homelessness in the capital, and boosting the quality of the accommodation provided will give the people they help a far better chance to transform their futures.”
