London leads house price slowdown

House prices rose at their slowest pace in five years in August as the property market continued to cool off.

According to official figures, house prices rose by 3.2% in the year to August to an average of £233,000, down from a 3.4% rise in July.

London was the only region where prices fell. They were down by 0.2% after being unchanged in the year to July, according to figures compiled by the Land Registry and the Office for National Statistics. This was the fourth month in the year when prices in the capital fell.
