London needs 1m extra homes by 2036

MIPIM UK: Space needs to be found for 1m additional homes in London and the South East by 2036, according to new research by AECOM.

The findings are based on its analysis of the housing shortfall of the 127 local authorities within 90 km of central London.

There are currently only 1.5m homes planned, and 1m more need to be identified.

Research also reveals that the population of the region is nearing 20m, and is set to surpass 24m by 2036.

Andrew Jones, AECOM’s managing director for Design, Planning + Economics in Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA), said: “To properly manage London’s future growth, we must start looking at London as a metropolis of 20m people that is economically, socially and culturally connected to the capital.”
