London set for 5,000-capacity cultural venue in former sugar warehouse

London is to get a new 5,000-capacity cultural venue in a former Tate & Lyle warehouse in the East End.

The Beams will be a 55,000 sq ft space in Silvertown, E16. It will operate as a multi-purpose venue, expected to be used for filming, photo shoots, music, cultural events, brand events, large-scale set builds, exhibitions, fashion shows and the arts.

Venue Lab, whose parent company Broadwick Live owns Canada Water’s Printworks venue along with British Land, has leased the space from headlease holder Projekt and will operate the Beams. Tate & Lyle is the freeholder of the site. The Beams will open in April.

Simon Tracey, chief operating officer at Venue Lab, said: “Drawing on our existing experience of transforming underutilised spaces to create valuable environments for all stakeholders, the launch of the Beams will bring an exciting new venue to a prime location in the Royal Docks, an area which is undergoing significant change.”

The space is near another former Tate & Lyle warehouse which is being turned into a 110,000 sq ft affordable workspace. Venue Lab also operates venues such as the 13,680 sq ft Exhibition London in White City and 108,000 sq ft Depot Mayfield in Manchester.
