London to accommodate elderly

London mayor Boris Johnson has sets targets for housing the elderly in his London Plan launched at MIPIM last week.

The plan introduces benchmarks for the delivery of housing for older people in every borough. The London-wide target is 3,900 units each a year until 2025. Delivery in London over the past few years has been around 1,200 units a year.

The plan also encourages local authorities to “maintain, manage and enhance” local pubs and raises the target for house building to 42,389 homes per year, an increase of 10,000 from the targets adopted previously.

Johnson said: “The London Plan is quite literally the capital’s planning bible – driving development and setting out exactly what is and is not acceptable as we work to build a cleaner, greener, safer city that abounds with opportunity, talent and economic activity.”
