London Town has withdrawn its plans for a 32-storey residential tower next to London’s Tate Modern.
The developer dropped its plans after meetings with Southwark’s planning officers. The meetings followed opposition to the scheme from local residents, Tate director Nicholas Serota, and English Heritage. However, it had been supported by London Mayor Ken Livingstone.
English Heritage last month told Southwark that it would have to draw up an urban design framework for the tower if the plans were approved, as it clashed with Southwark’s UDP.
Plans for the £55m scheme, designed by Kevin Dash Architects and Gumuchdjin Associates, were submitted to Southwark Borough council at the end of July 2001. The tower would have comprised 33 private apartments and 16 social housing apartments.
