London traffic must be seen to be cut by scheme

Traffic in London must be seen to be cut if the congestion charging scheme in the capital is to succeed, reports the Financial Times.

Many fear the scheme, which starts from 17 February, will flop because the technology fails, there is chaos on the streets, or congestion continues.

Capita expects to make about £28m from the five-year contract to run the scheme.

Packed railways will leave buses poised to take the strain.

A report from Transport from London today argues that buses are on track to deliver the “biggest single package of improvements on the capitals transport network for 50 years.” The Daily Telegraph leader says the congestion charge is “irksome and unnecessary”.
