London’s economy recovers faster as rest of UK falls behind

London’s economy has powered ahead of the other regions in England since the pandemic.

The capital’s economy grew by 2.7% in the three months to the end of June, compared with the final quarter of 2019 before the pandemic hit.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show this was the strongest performance of any region, with GDP across England still 1.7% below pre-pandemic levels. The East and West Midlands were 5.7% below the final quarter of 2019.

However, the worst performance came from the South East, where output was down 7.1% on pre-pandemic levels.
