A longer consultation process might have prevented the current issues with the Help to Buy Isa and the use of the government’s 25% bonus, critics say.
Normally there would have been a lengthy public consultation process, but in this instance the details were decided by a private working group to speed up the process.
Conservative MP and Treasury Committee member Jacob Rees-Mogg said the flaw might have been spotted with a lengthier consultation. What is needed is flexibility if an honest mistake is made, he said.
