Lord Macdonald replaces Helen Liddell as transport minister as part of prime minister Tony Blair’s latest reconstruction of the middle ranks of government.
His private sector experience is thought to be valuable in tackling serious problems such as the delayed public-private partnership for the London Underground. Glenda Jackson has quit her post as junior transport minister. She wants to stand as a candidate to become mayor of London.
Meanwhile deputy prime minister John Prescott continues to be savaged by political foes over his transport record. The Independent interprets the changes at the DETR as a slap-down for Prescott by the prime minister.
