MAPIC 2013: Almost 1.5m sq ft of A1 retail space could be lost to other uses this year following the doubling in Q3 of the number of applications to convert retail space in the planning pipeline.
Landlords made applications to convert 288 units or 837,000 sq ft of retail space in the year to end of September, according to Estates Gazette Retail Research, with leisure and restaurants leading the charge.
Half of all applications were accounted for by just three regions: the South East, closely followed by Scotland and the North West.
Betting shop applications stood steady around the 40,000 sq ft mark last quarter, with marginally more consented in the Midlands at 62%, than the rest of the UK.
