Lottery grants announced for galleries and museums

The Tate Gallery has won £18.75m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to transform its Millbank home into the Tate Gallery of British Art. The proposals, adding 35% more space, will cost £27.67m. Work is scheduled for completion in 2001.

The National Portrait Gallery is getting £11.9m to build a new wing and the Wallace Collection in London will receive £7.24m for a sculpture garden cafe in its courtyard.

Manchester City Art Gallery won £15m to renovate its building and the Victoria & Albert museum secured approval to refurbish its British Galleries at a cost of £31m. A full grants’ list is detailed in The Times.
