Loungers sees the Brightside with roadside restaurants

Cafe-bar operator Loungers has launched a new roadside diner chain, called Brightside, which it plans to spread across the UK.

Chair and co-founder Alex Reilley said the company had “an itch” to create a roadside restaurant concept that was fit for purpose in the 21st century.

He added: “For many people, the highlight of childhood road trips in days gone by was a stop at the likes of Little Chef. We believe there is a gap in the market for a fresh concept that gives customers the option to take a proper break.”

To start with, Loungers is acquiring three roadside diners run by Route Restaurants, formerly Little Chefs and Happy Eaters and a mixture of leasehold and freehold properties.

The first is due to open opposite Exeter Racecourse in February, with two more sites — on the A303 near Honiton and the A38 near Saltash — to follow in the spring.

Loungers runs 175 Lounges and 35 Cosy Club venues across the country and is adding 30 a year. The Brightside restaurants are on top of its core expansion plans.
