Low-skilled workers in England are having to spend 40% or more of their pay on rent, research by the National Housing Federation shows.
The median earnings for such workers is around £18,500, according to the Office for National Statistics. The median average private monthly rent is £7,800 a year.
With housing usually the largest item of expenditure, the decoupling of housing costs from earnings has the most far-reaching consequences for those at the bottom of the earnings curve, the NHF said.
