Britain’s longest road tunnel will be built under the Thames as part of a plan to reduce congestion on the M25.
The government wants to build the 2.4-mile toll tunnel between Kent and Essex to speed up journeys for cars and lorries to Britain’s busiest Channel ports at Dover and Folkestone.
The Lower Thames Crossing would be by far the biggest road building project in Britain at present and the largest scheme since the opening of the M25 motorway 30 years ago.
