The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) has announced that Canning Town will be its first regeneration project.
It will support Newham Council in improving the transport interchange and removing the roundabout under the A13 to improve traffic flows and pedestrian flows, representing a government investment of £12m in Canning Town Centre.
The Canning Town & Custom House Regeneration team is also leading the area’s mixed communities initiative, a plan that will see the demolition of 1,900 single tenure dwellings and the subsequent development of over 7,000 mixed tenure homes.
LTGDC Chief Executive Peter Andrews said: “This is an excellent opening project for the corporation and our first opportunity to take positive action to accelerate the regeneration of this strategically important part of our territory.
“Delivery of this key piece of infrastructure will release new and better quality investment opportunities for the private sector, and will make a real contribution to improving the quality of life for local people.”
