Luge plans are a slippery slope, say opponents

Campaigners and residents have split over plans for a luge track that could soon wind its way through the Cumbrian landscape.

The proposals for Blaze Fell, which lies on the eastern edge of the Lake District near Carlisle, include an 840m track which would allow visitors to zoom down the slope in gravity-powered carts and an electric chairlift to take them back to the top.

Residents of Armathwaite, the adjacent village, believe that the area would be unable to cope with an influx of up to 1,000 tourists a day. Supporters have pointed to the eco-friendly benefits, compared with other attractions.

The proposals have been put forward by Charles Lowther, the landowner, and Daniel Holder, who runs a sustainable holiday park.
