Marks & Spencer (M&S) has signed up for the 36,000 sq ft (3,340 sq m) former C&A unit at Peel Holding’s Trafford Centre in south Manchester.
The deal ends two years of speculation about the flagging high street giant’s intentions at the centre. They had been among those retailers rumoured to be sceptical about the centre before its opening in 1998 and committed instead to central Manchester.
However, market observers had always expected them to open at the centre eventually. A deal with M&S had been strongly tipped since the announcement of the C&A closures late last year.
Trafford Centre business director James Lindsay said they would be a “brilliant asset”.
