M6 toll charge announced

The £600m M6 toll will cost £11 for lorries, £6 for vans, £3 for cars and £2 for motorcycles, during the day, when it opens in January.

Cheaper rates will be charged from 11pm-6am to use the Birmingham Bypass.

Midlands Express, which built the 27-mile road, will offer a £1 discount for the first 10m vehicles.

The road runs north of the existing M6 from junctions four to seven, bypassing one of the most congested sections of road in Europe.

The Independent reports that ministers have ordered a feasibility study on a national network of privately owned roads to relieve congestion.
