Macdonald Hotel signed for Sheffield regeneration scheme

Macdonald Hotels is to build an £18m, 150-bed hotel at the centre of Sheffield’s “Heart of the City” regeneration project.

The four-star hotel will be located on the corners of Norfolk Street and Surrey Street, beside the planned four-to-five acre (1.6-2ha) commercial element of the Sheffield city centre scheme.

Macdonald said it intends to create one of Sheffield’s premier hotels, repeating the success of its The Holyrood hotel in Edinburgh, which won the AA’s Scottish Hotel of the Year award in 2000.

Urban regeneration body Sheffield One has just begun the process of selecting a developer for the commercial element, which comprises Grade A offices, as well as some residential and leisure.

The £120m Heart of the City project, which covers 10 acres (4ha), includes the recently opened Millennium Galleries and the Winter Garden, which is due to open later this year, as well as two further office developments, Howden House and Derwent House.
