Mace submits application for Stevenage town centre revamp

Mace has submitted a planning application that could create new retail and commercial space in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, along with 1,800 homes.

The submission covers 14.5 acres, and would form part of a string of developments planned for the town centre’s wider 20-year, £1bn regeneration strategy.

The proposal, known as SG1, includes 37,670 sq ft of new retail and commercial space. The first phase proposes 760 new homes in the town centre.

It is divided into 10 development plots, and also features a new public square, a new park, a public services hub and a new primary school.

Kevin Cowin, director at Mace, said: “We aim to revitalise the town centre by introducing new homes, vibrant activities, community facilities and inviting public spaces.

“Our vision is to deliver a thriving, successful and attractive heart to Stevenage which will serve the needs of local people and businesses for decades to come.”

Stevenage Borough Council appointed Mace as the developer last year, following a competitive tendering process. The scheme is estimated to bring around £350m of private investment into the town.

Mace is also managing the delivery of improvements to the existing town square, in partnership with Ashe Construction.
