The London Borough of Lambeth is in discussions with potential joint venture partners to build a sports and leisure centreon a seven acre site in Streatham, SW16.
If the development gets the go-ahead, it will be a major catalyst for regeneration in Streatham. A planning application is likely to submitted in early 1997, and a bid to the sports lottery fund will be made in June.
The scheme would be build on land now occupied by Streatham Bus Garage, Streatham Ice Rink, the council’s Streatham Pool, a former council depot and an adjoining site at the southern end of Streatham High Road.
A council report says there is ‘in principle’ agreement with the Sports Council, the national ice and swimming bodies and the National Lottery Sports Fund for an international standard ice rink and a new 25 metre swimming pool.
The joint venture would also include Laws Estates, which owns the ice rink. Several commercial leisure operators are interested in developing the remainder of the site.
Strategic Leisure is the council’s project manager. Fitzroy Robinson is the consultant architect.
