Residential rents must be frozen immediately and evictions banned, say the mayors of Manchester, Liverpool and London.
In a joint letter to levelling up secretary Michael Gove, the leaders of three of the UK’s biggest cities said the measures, which would bring England in line with Scotland, were needed to help renters deal with the cost of living crisis.
Signatories to the letter, co-ordinated by the London Renters Union, included Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester, and his counterparts in Liverpool and London, Steve Rotheram and Sadiq Khan. They were joined by the co-leaders of the Green Party and several trade union leaders, among others.
