Manchester airport tramway link approved

The government has approved an extension of Manchester’s Metrolink to the city’s airport. It should be ready by 2002. The 13 mile tramway extension will be built to link with the original Bury and Altrincham stretch.

Tram projects are also underway in Birmingham and Croydon. There are proposals for new lines in Leeds and other cities. But there are problems in Sheffield where local authorities have government permission to raise £20m to cover losses.

Swampy, the environmental activist, is to lend his tunnel-digging expertise to protesters against the new runway at Manchester.
