Manchester BTR tower to be refused

A 34-storey, 485-home build-to-rent tower in Manchester could be officially rejected by planning officials next week.

Manchester’s planning and highways committee last month said it was “minded to refuse” proposals for a £154m GDV tower on Port Street, which would be managed by Select Property Group’s Affinity Living.

The plans attracted 211 letters of objection and just 34 in support. The committee voted to knock back the scheme over concerns regarding its size and scale, as well as its impact on the conservation area, affordable housing provision and the environmental effect of the development.

The committee will now receive a fresh officers’ report at next week’s meeting, laying out grounds for refusal – although planning officers still say the scheme is “acceptable” and should be approved.

Under planning committee rules, if a committee decides it is minded to refuse an application, the head of planning must report at the next meeting whether there are relevant planning considerations that could “sustain” that decision.
