Manchester council consults on Northern Quarter resi scheme

Manchester City Council is seeking feedback from residents and businesses on proposals to develop a site in the Northern Quarter.

The move comes after £5.1m of funding was approved late last year to bring forward four residential projects in the city:

  • 129 homes at No1 Ancoats Green, off Oldham Road
  • 150 homes on Hyde Road in Longsight, east Manchester
  • 175 homes at Monsall in north Manchester
  • 126 homes on Postal Street in the Northern Quarter.

The first development, No1 Ancoats Green, began on site in 2023 and is expected to complete later this year.

The council has now revealed details of the fourth of these schemes, with 126 homes to be built for rent on brownfield land at Postal Street through its housing company, This City. The plans include 70 one-bedroom and 56 two-bedroom flats, at least 20% of which will be made available at the Manchester Living Rent. The development will also provide ground-floor commercial space.

Gavin White, executive member for housing and development at Manchester City Council, said: “This City is an innovative way of increasing the number of homes built on council land – building the homes we know our residents want, including affordable homes, on our own terms.

“Gathering feedback from people who live and work in the area is a vital part of the process and will help guide the final proposals ahead of a planning application.”

The consultation closes on 2 February 2025. Click here for more details.
