Manchester international design competition attracts 27 world-wide entries

An international competition aimed at redesigning Manchester’s bomb-damaged centre has attracted 27 entries from national and international consortia.

In June an IRA bomb damaged 49,000 sq m (527,448.86 sq ft) of prime retail space and 57,000 sq m (613,562.97 sq ft) of offices.

Cllr Richard Leese, leader of the city council and deputy chairman of the Manchester Millennium task force which is charged with redesigning the centre, said the challenge was “not to replicate a European model in Manchester, but to build on our architectural and cultural heritage and deliver, in a realistic timeframe, a working, living city of the quality that the region and its people deserve.”

By the 4th September the Council hopes to have shortlisted at least five of the entries. Stage II entries are due by 18 October and a competition winner will be announced on 1 November.
