Manchester’s Belle Vue could become major sports venue again

Manchester City Council has commissioned a study into the revitalisation of the city’s old leisure and entertainment complex at Belle Vue, once the home of speedway and greyhound racing in the city but now much dilapidated. The council along with English Partnerships and Wembley plc has appointed Grimley together with Halliday Meacham and JMP to prepare a strategy and action plan for the complex which includes cinema, bingo hall, snooker hall, greyhound stadium, speedway track, athletic track and football pitches. Leading the study team is Grimley’s planning partner Gerard Hughes.Gerry Hughes said the study forms part of the Stockport Road Initiative which aims to identify opportunities for strengthening Belle Vue’s attractions as a sports centre to complement the proposals for the new Commonwealth Games stadium at Eastlands.”At present Belle Vue comprises a miscellaneous collection of leisure facilities. The creation of a more structured and cohesive leisure centre there will also reinforce Belle Vue’s appeal as a regional centre, attracting people from across the region to visit east Manchester.” Hughes said.
