Manchester City Football Club’s historic Maine Road stadium could be pulled down and the site redeveloped as housing or a supermarket.
The club is widely tipped to be moving into Manchester’s new £100m stadium, announced this week at the same time as Wembley’s successful bid for the national sports arena. City played a close role in the negotiations.
A spokesman for the club told EGi it has talked to the council about becoming the anchor tenant of the new development. He added that housing and a supermarket are two of the options being considered for the site.
According to the club, talks are likely to continue after two boardroom appointments in the New Year.
If Maine Road is not redeveloped as shops or houses, it could remain as a stadium for other uses. But if Manchester City does relocate, it will join a handful of other clubs – including Southampton and Sunderland – to give up their famous homes.
