Manchester to green-light thousands of new homes

Manchester City Council is set to give the nod to nearly 5,000 new homes to be built across the city, including 3,900 co-living bedrooms.

A trio of major schemes are among the proposals recommended for approval.  The largest of these is Downing Developments’ 2,224-bed co-living scheme at First Street.

A decision will also be made on the second phase of Renaker’s Crown Street and Vita Group’s two co-living tower blocks.

Renaker lodged plans in April for two 52-storey residential towers at Crown Street, marking the second phase of development as part of the wider Great Jackson Street masterplan.

The two towers will comprise 855 homes and a three-level basement parking area for 389 cars. The towers would be linked by a two storey podium with lounge space, a gym, a sauna and two retail units on the ground floor. Plans also include a three-storey primary school between the two towers and phase one of Crown Street (a further two towers providing a total of 664 homes).

Vita Group has lodged plans for two co-living schemes in Water Street – a 36-storey tower with 374 flats and a 32-storey tower with 390 apartments. Combined, these will offer 1,676 co-living bedrooms.

Also set for approval is the fourth phase of Waterside Places’ Islington Wharf scheme. The developer lodged plans in April for 106 homes in a stepped building, ranging from 11 to 16 storeys in height, on the former site of the Manchester School of Building between Great Ancoats Street and Old Mill Street.

The council is additionally preparing to approve a pub-to-residential conversion scheme, which will turn  the former Tatton Arms pub in Northenden into 28 apartments.

The committee will debate the planning applications on 30 July.
